I have heard about solar shingles that are a better material for your roof. Newer homes should be making use of these new ideas. Just think of all the places that could benefit from a living roof. The cities alone could use a living roof.

A living roof, such as a roof garden or solar roof systems are the most common green roof options. However they are usually the most expensive forms of green roof systems. A metal roof can become more energy efficient, by restoring it with a light colored roof coating. That would be a much more cost effective solution.

I think the best way to make your roof and your home green is by installing solar panels atop your roof, though it is an expensive investment they will pay for themselves over time with the amount of electricity that you are going to be able to save.
