Obesity and Weight Loss

Eat and Lose WeightAmericans have a reputation for being overweight, and by overweight I mean obese. You may or may not know this, but obesity can affect everything from fertility to heart health.

Having a lot of extra fat on your body causes a huge number of health problems. In fact, it’s more than reasonable to say that being fat causes most of the health problems we know about today, and many others we’re not even aware of yet.

Obesity is an epidemic that grows for both children and adults each and every day. And that epidemic keeps leading us further and further down the road to serious health problems.

Obesity is such a problem in today’s society in fact, that it’s now common place to see weight loss reality shows on tv. And the sad thing is, kids and adults alike will sit and watch those shows instead of getting up and doing something about their own weight problems.

ephedra free weight lossThere are though, many ways to lose body fat. All of the approaches work well, but they all take time, effort, commitment, and sacrifice. And that’s where some of the major obesity problems of today come from unfortunately. Everyone wants instant gratification. So they eat microwaved meal, or buy a burger and fries at a fast food stop. They wolf down ready made cakes and pies while watching TV, or they munch on candy and drink sodas with lots of sugar and little nutritional value.

Most people don’t eat whole foods because it’s not available in a drive through and takes time to prepare at home. Conveniences are putting on pounds faster than we get realize.

The growing problems with obesity in today’s society stem from many things though. One major problem of course is the convenience foods we already mentioned, and another is misinformation.

For instance, years ago the general public was told to stop eating foods which were high in fat. The problem is that people started supplementing their diets with empty calories instead.

In the average grocery store, you can look in the candy isle and find many sugar-laden sweets which advertise in big bold letters on the packaging: “No Fat!” or “Low Fat!”. As if somehow that means the candy is healthy for you.

One other problem is being satiated from the meals and snacks we eat. When you cut fat drastically low or eliminate it all together from your diet, you’ll find yourself hungrier more often throughout the day. This is because fat actually helps fill us up and keeps us satisfied for longer periods of time. That doesn’t mean you should go the opposite directions and eat all high fat foods either though, because there are both good and bad fats.

Now another source of misunderstanding or misinformation is the generally accepted FDA food pyramid that most people grew up with. This pyramid was designed with the best intentions, but it was interpreted badly over the years.

Carbohydrates in the form of bread products was said to be the primary types of foods we should eat. Now, back in the 1940′s or 1950′s and earlier, this may have been quite true.

In years past, “bread” was a lot different than it is today, and back then people did a lot more manual labor than they do today. When you have a lot of physical activity in your life, your body needs and uses those carbohydrates.

Today bread has nothing like grains or fiber in it. In fact, what most people call bread doesn’t even have any vitamins or nutrition in it unless something has been added. This is because manufacturers strip out all of the good nutrition, then they add fake synthetic stuff back in.

Activity levels are also quite different today than they were 50 or more years ago too. Instead of working our bodies each day, we work our minds instead.

There is nothing wrong with working the mind of course, but due to the lifestyle changes we now have, we need to work harder at exercising our bodies or we need to change our eating styles. Ideally we should be doing both.

The Avoidance Habit

Avoidance and ProcrastionOften people don’t recognize the signs of the avoidance habit. Perhaps you are a drama queen that creates drama as a distraction so you won’t have to deal with a particular issue. You might be living in clutter so deep you’ve lost yourself. The avoidance habit hits young, so it may be so ingrained that you don’t fully recognize all the ways you actually procrastinate.

Start out by taking a large or complicated task and breaking it down into smaller parts that you can accomplish easier. It’s important to bear in mind that the most difficult or complex tasks are simply just a series of smaller jobs. Be gentle with yourself when you decide to try and kick the avoidance habit.

Generally speaking, we procrastinate in order to avoid something. Often that something is an uncomfortable feeling. The procrastination habit morphs into avoidance and disorganization which will rob you of time, peace of mind, and health.

Your capacity to function effectively will be greatly reduced. While the avoidance habit is a hard one to break, ignoring things won’t help. Some honest self-assessment and an achievable plan of attack can overcome the avoidance habit.

Unfortunately, the avoidance habit can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which will limit your success. If your habit manifests itself as being chronically late, make a verbal commitment to someone else about improving your time management skills and your desire to avoid procrastinating.

Ask yourself, what are the habits you have that are keeping you from achieving your goals? Which ones seem to become magnified during the holiday season? Jot them down and let them become your New Year’s Resolutions. Allow others to become involved in your efforts and this will bring in an element of accountability. You’ll feel more of a commitment if you know others are watching.

Don’t be afraid to seek out help. Let’s say you have a problem with clutter. Consider having a professional organizer in to help you or even a friend or relative who has great organization skills. You’ll need someone with a teaching spirit who will not condemn you, but help you get on the right track.

Sit down and map out a plan to manage your life more effectively. If a deadline is looming, make sure you allot time each day to work on the project so it doesn’t sneak up on you in the final hours or days. Learn to ask for help when you’re feeling overwhelmed or overworked.

Another tool for success is meditation. Meditation will teach you mindfulness which is a way to be present with your feelings. Most people act out their feelings or suppress them. Once you learn to be present with your feelings, especially negative feelings, you will realize that you are not your feelings. You can acknowledge them without acting on them. The habit of avoidance will go away as you become comfortable with your feelings.

Don’t wait until you’ve accomplished the ultimate goal. It’s okay to reward yourself for your successes along the way. Make sure the reward is something that doesn’t indulge a bad habit! Buy a book by your favorite author and take the time to read it. Have a candlelight bubble bath. Make a commitment to stop the avoiding habit, and you’ll find more time as well as being more relaxed, productive, and less stressed in the process.

Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can be very stressful, not only for the person who’s losing their hearing, but also for their spouses and other loved ones. Hearing loss can put a severe strain on any relationship, especially if it’s untreated or undiagnosed. The problem is that many people are resistant about going to a doctor for their hearing issues.

While they’re not nearly as accurate as a hearing test by a doctor, there are different screening tools for hearing loss that you can find online. These can’t be used as a recommendation for treatment, but if the tests indicate a problem it may be easier to convince your loved one they need to see a doctor. Besides, it’s much easier to talk them into doing a simple exercise online than booking an appointment and taking time out of their day to go see a specialist.

Understanding and Dealing With Hearing LossIf your spouse is adamant against going to a doctor or taking other tests to see if they have a hearing problem, you may be able to determine whether they are going deaf or just not paying attention to you by paying closer attention to them. If your spouse is in a quiet room and doesn’t hear you tell them to do something, but can hear you making a snack while the TV is on, they may just not be listening to you. You may also be able to notice hearing loss by listening to how loud they keep the TV or radio or if they tend to listen better to what you are saying when they can actually see your lips moving.

We often use the term selective hearing to describe when someone is simply ignoring what you say, but just because someone has good hearing, doesn’t mean they can actually hear you. Hearing is not only a product of the ears, it’s also a product of how the brain interprets the information the ears are sending it. They may actually have an attention problem or similar disorder.

While your loved ones hearing loss may be annoying to you, it may be dangerous to them and to others. While ignoring hearing loss may seem harmless, it could mean them missing the warning honk of a car or someone calling for help. That’s why it’s important to see a specialist to find out if there really is a problem.

The easiest and best way to tell if your loved one is losing their hearing is to go to a doctor and get a simple hearing test. That’s the only way to tell if the problem is genetic or due to something as simple as excessive ear wax. Often people don’t want to admit that their hearing is failing. They’ll refuse to get tested because they assume that nothing can be done, and they just don’t want to get a bad report from the doctor. That would be a mistake since many hearing problems can be treated with medication or surgery.

Aging Eyes

Eye ChartAs we age, it’s easy to see the effects of gravity on our bodies. Likewise, our eyesight changes over time. Even if you’ve escaped wearing glasses or contact lenses for much of your life, it’s rare to get past the age of 40 without some changes in vision.

People who have never worn glasses will find out that they need them for reading or driving. If you drive at night with no problems, you may suddenly encounter problems with night vision.

Nowadays, the use of computers makes it very rare indeed since the muscles that control our long distance vision tend not to get much of a workout when you sit in front of a PC all day. As you age, you will definitely notice changes in your vision.

Gray hair, sagging skin, and low vision. It’s inevitable, but the best defense again eye problems is regular eye exams. Experts recommend having your eyes examined every two to four years by an optometrist or ophthalmologist between 40 and 64 years of age. From age 65 every one to two years by an ophthalmologist. Be sure to mention any diseases you have, drug allergies, eye injuries, infections, or operations. These, along with your family history, are important assessment tools since some eye diseases are associated with heredity.

Here are just some of the vision issues that aging individuals may have to deal with as the years go on. Many can be managed through surgery or medication.

1. Dry Eye Syndrome is a very common complaint. The eyes produce tears that clean away dust, dirt, and keep the eyeball lubricated. As we age, tear ducts may produce fewer tears. Another reason for the high incidence of dry eye complaints is the increase in long wearing contact lenses and spending many hours in front of the PC without blinking. Dry eyes can be corrected with artificial tear drops, or in more severe cases, an exploration of the tear ducts to see if there is a physiological reason why they are not working.

If you have dry eyes, stay avoid caffeine as it can dehydrate your eyes. Avoid dust, pollen, and other pollutants. On windy days, wear wraparound sun glasses. Use an artificial lubricant recommended by your doctor. Some over-the-counter eyedrops are vasoconstrictors that may make the problem worse. Also, consider using a humidifier at home.

2. According to the National Eye Institute, about half of Americans over 65 have cataracts. An eye with a cataract has a foggy lens and the opacity prevents light from reaching the retina. Cataracts that form on our lenses result in poor vision that can only be corrected with surgery. The cloudy lens is removed and a new artificial lens is put in its place.

If it believed that your chances of cataracts are increased if you smoke, have diabetes, or use corticosteroids. Some studies link cataracts to alcohol consumption. Also, long-term exposure to high level ultraviolet rays from the sun is another hazard.

3. With a detached retina the retina will peel off the back wall of the eye — like wallpaper. The retina is a thin sheet of light sensitive nerve tissue lining the inside of the eye. It sends impulses to the brain and receives information that results in the objects that we see. Although it can happen any time, it’s most likely if you’ve had cataract removed, eye injury, nearsightedness, or a family history of retinal detachment.

This is a serious condition that can lead to loss of vision. In many cases, retinal detachment can be treated with surgery if it’s caught before too much damage has occurred. If you suddenly experience blurred vision, floaters, flashing lights, or loss of vision like a curtain being draw in front of the eye, it’s important to see a doctor immediately.

4. Once you reach the age of 60 or so, it’s common to see flecks or cobwebs drifting across your line of vision. These floaters are clusters of cells that have separated from vitreous humor or gel in your eye. Flashes are another common age-related eye problem. The technical term is photopsia. These flashes appear when vitreous gel movement tugs at the retina. They’re generally harmless and don’t need treatment.

5. Over four million Americans and 50 million people suffer with some form of glaucoma. This condition can affect older people. Glaucoma can cause blindness through damage to the eye due to high fluid pressures in the eye. Medication and other conditions can raise the pressure. Glaucoma surgery relieves the pressure in the eye and attempts to prevent the fluid from building up again.

Good vision depends on a healthy optic nerve. Generally, you are at increased risk for glaucoma if you are older than age 40, are of African-American descent, have a family history of the disease, have elevated internal eye pressure, or have a previous serious eye injury.

Your eyes are a reflection of your overall health. An eye exam can detect diabetes, AIDS, or high blood pressure. Our eyes can age well or age poorly. If you have any of the above conditions, consult an eye doctor right away for viable solutions.

Relaxation and Behavioral Techniques for Treating Stress

say_googbye_to_stress_foreverAcute episodes of stress can actually trigger a heart attack. Your first step is to identify what actually causes your stress. If you’re unsure, you should consider keeping a stress journal. In this book, you’ll record the occasions that stress you, trigger an angry response in or actually produce an adverse physical response.

For example, if a certain circumstance gave you an upset stomach or a headache, write it down. This response was probably due to stress. Be sure to write down the time of day as well. Then you need to decipher the types of events or activities which caused this. You then work on alternatives to these circumstances.

One writer once said that the only people who aren’t under any type of stress are those in the cemetery. In other words, if you’re living, you’re living with some level of stress. Now it’s just a matter of how you handle the stress. You’ll want to change the way you react to the things you can’t change.

Just as no two people react the same way to the presence of stress; no two people benefit in the same from the same methods of stress management. If, in your search, you discover that one method doesn’t work for you, don’t hesitate to discard it and try something else. If you are experiencing stress-related medical problems, it’s essential that you work hand in hand with your family doctor.

Two things you can do are exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet. Exercising 30 minutes three times a week in cardiovascular work outs will help reduce stress. Our muscles tighten and then relax which helps to reduce the overall feelings of stress. For example stress restricts blood vessels but exercise loosens them and strengthens the heart muscles. The benefits of exercise are psychological and physiological.

As for eating a healthy diet, you might be busy so you gobble down fast food and eat on the go. The problem is that unhealthy foods help you to feel fatigued because you are not getting enough nutrition and this in turn affects your thought processes. If you aren’t at the top of your game when busy you are going to feel even more stress. In addition, poor food choices compound the negative health effects of stress by causing further physical breakdown.

First prepare what you want your mind to focus on that’s positive; for example, write out affirmations like, I want to complete all my work more efficiently, in 3 hours today, without all the email hassles and other interruptions of the day. Then physically relax your body and your mind will follow. As your mind relaxes, focus on what you have prepared and gently tell yourself your affirmation statements, visualizing them in the process. See yourself completing your work, uninterrupted by phone calls, kids running in and out of the house, or other distractions

If it’s your working conditions that are causing you undue stress, then you need to re-evaluate your employment. What exactly is causing your stress at work? Your boss? Co-workers? Short of changing employment, is there anything that could be done?

If not, then you need to learn how to manage the stressors in your life better. Here are just a few possible stress management techniques:

Talk about it. Yes, we know it sounds corny. But it works. If you can’t release those feelings of stress, anxiety and anger, you’ll liable to work them out in some unacceptable way. You’ll find yourself yelling at your children more, or being more hostile with your spouse. You may also find that untreated stress may make you aggressive.

Look at the bright side of the issue. Stay focused on the positive. No doubt you’ve heard about that law of attraction. If you stay focused on the positive, then that’s what will increase in your life. You’ll find that your negative emotions as well as the stressors will eventually melt away – well, at least they’ll thaw out enough that they’re easier to deal with.

Discover some good relaxation techniques. You might want to enlist the help of your doctor with this one. Ask what he would suggest along these lines. Of course, temporary aids include a good massage as well as yoga classes. You might also want to learn how to meditate, this can lower your heart rate as well as your brain waves.

Did you know that the moment you close your eyes, your brain waves slow and your body is beginning to adjust to a slower pace. Just closing your eyes in the middle of the day, and taking several deep breaths could be the action that saves you from going over the edge.

Chemical Free Drains

Clogged DrainIt’s so easy to pour something down the drain and watch it disappear along with your problem, but the problem doesn’t really disappear. The problem is made worse by the pollution caused by the caustic chemicals in drain cleaners. Most drain cleaners are poisonous to us all, as well as the environment. So what are your options? Actually, there are several ways to clear a clogged drain.

One of the easiest and cheapest ways to move a clog is to use a plunger to try to move the clog out of the way with pressure. If you have previously used chemicals in the drain to remove the clog, make sure you use rubber gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself.

Following the plunger method, you could try plain, boiling hot water. Plug off the overflow holes and start pouring boiling water slowly down the drain. Leave the water in the sink for at least a half hour. The clog may dissipate on its own.

If you haven’t used a commercial drain cleaning product recently, you might consider using this solution. All of these items would commonly be found in your kitchen.

Pour one-half cup of baking soda into your drain. Carefully pour one-half cup of vinegar over the baking soda and cover the drain, if at all possible. At this point, the two will begin bubbling just like a child’s volcano experiment for school. After a few minutes the bubbling should stop.

Pour at least a half gallon of boiling water over what’s left of the baking soda and vinegar. Then follow that with hot running water to flush it all down the drain. This process may have to be used more than once to clear the stubborn clog.

If after you’ve tried the vinegar and baking soda and the clog is still there, you have other options besides chemicals. Do you have a snake? This is a 25-50 foot metal wire with a bulb at the end. You push the snake into the drain. When it hits the blockage, you just keep twisting until the drain runs free.

So you’ve tried a plunger, vinegar and baking soda, boiling water, and a snake. What happens if your drain is still clogged? Of course you can always call a plumber, but at least try these methods before pouring a drain cleaner down the drain. If none of these methods work, you probably have a more serious problem than a simple clog anyway.
